Giana Korth cofounder of Tampon Tribe - leadership interview on Torch PodcastGiana Korth, Founding Member of Tampon Tribe, walks us through the incredibly important facts of why, as women, we need to examine what our purchasing habits say about what we truly value. Meaning, the feminine hygiene products we purchase may not always be the best for our bodies or the planet. It’s crucial to put our bodies first, and we do that through our buying power, ladies!

Giana also covers interesting business learnings she transitioned from her nine-year career in software sales to now running business development at her startup. She reveals books that successfully adjusted her management style, and increased her sales and negotiating skills. She shares how you can add value to your customers, and how to educate them on your product and service.

Tampon Tribe team photo - Torch podcast interviewWe also get into their Mask Appeal GoFundMe campaign to support Covid-19 relief support. Tampon Tribe is using their manufacturing facilities to produce 200,000 medical grade masks a day to help clinics and medical staff in the U.S.

Tampon Tribe has changed the paradigm in producing products that follow stricter global organic guidelines than the loose organic standards in the U.S. Their products are certified organic, meeting both GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and ICEA (Europe’s guidelines – Istituto per la Certificazione Etica e Ambientale) standards. Their products are toxin-free, hypoallergenic, chemical-free, plastic-free, and compostable.

To help combat “period poverty” in the U.S., they created Project Code Red. There are over 12 Million women within the menstrual age range who live below the poverty line and have difficulties finding proper hygiene products, if any. For every month you make a purchase, they give a day pack of feminine hygiene to a women in need.

I wanted to share some findings on the insane level of toxins we actively put in our bodies by the cotton in our tampons: “The vagina is a highly permeable space: Anything we put inside can easily be absorbed through the mucus membrane and then into our bloodstream where it may present a toxic burden to the body. Chronic exposure increases our risk of cancer, causes oxidative stress and metabolic changes, and disrupts our endocrine system.”  – Dr. Maggie Ney

Dr. Ney goes on to explain, “Over 90% of the cotton produced in the United States has been genetically modified to be resistant to Round-up (i.e., glyphosate), which is a very powerful herbicide used to kill weeds that compete with cotton for growth. Chronic exposure increases our risk of cancer, causes oxidative stress and metabolic changes, and disrupts our endocrine system. This can contribute to adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immunological effects. Conditions such as infertility, endometriosis, and thyroid disorders are all on the rise, for example, and are affected by exposures to chemicals and toxins in our environment.”

Giana walks us through what a Tampax VS Tampon Tribe product looks like when submerged in water. You’ll see the particles come off of the Tampax.
