Do you ever lie to yourself? Think about it. Those nagging negative thoughts that pull on your attention are straight up lies. You’re fat. You’re not good enough. The relationship ended because you’re not worth fighting for. You are not good at your job… they can be endless. As fleeting as they may sometimes be they can also happily live in your head for years.
So, why do we lie to ourselves? Those negative thoughts are not meant to take us away from our lives, but to protect us. They should protect us from what’s around the corner or from a car that’s quickly approaching us so we can be on alert and move quickly. These thoughts help us assess a room quickly to know if it’s safe or not. Yet, they are not meant to forever live in our heads and keep us from what’s really in front of us.
The more you see your negative thoughts as normal, the less meaning you put on them. We are all susceptible to negative thoughts, so now what? Well, to win any battle worth fighting you need to look at things from a different angle.
First, smile. Yes, that’s right smile! Change your body = change your energy.
Then flip the thought on its head. How can that thought help motivate you to make a change? How can is cause a positive reaction in your life?
Lastly, write it out. Confront it, like Buddha inviting Mara for tea. Mara represents temptation and rather than fleeing from Mara, the Buddha would invite her to sit with him and have tea. It’s in confronting the fear where you can gain insight and power to combat it.
